Isabel is a graduate of Universidad de Antioquia with a B.A. in  Social Communication – Journalism and a specialization in Organizational Communication. She received her M.A. and Ph.D. in Communication from Michigan State University. Her areas of specialty include strategic communication processes and next generation issues in family enterprises.

As a prolific researcher and a noted speaker, Isabel is distinguished as an intellectual leader in the field. She has gained first-hand insight into the methods and strategies of business families through her involvement with research and the education of next generation members. She has been a faculty at Stetson University, the University of Minnesota Duluth, Illinois State University, the University of Kentucky, DePaul University, and the University of Illinois Springfield. Further, Isabel spent time as a visiting scholar in the College of Business and Social Science at Aarhus University in Denmark. Currently she is a member of the faculty at the University of Louisville.

Alongside her commitment to teaching students, she has been recognized as a leading speaker, researcher and writer. She has presented at number of conferences, including Family Firm Institute Global Conference, the Academy of Management, Family Enterprise Research Conference, International Family Enterprise Research Academy, International Public Relations Research Conference, National Communication Association, and Next Generation Education Workshops. Isabel’s published work has appeared in the Family Business Review, Journal of Family Business Strategy, Journal of Family Business Management, Journal of Management Studies, and Management Communication Quarterly, amongst others.

She currently serves as an associate editor at the journal of family business strategy, board member and treasurer for IFERA (International Family Enterprise Research Academy), and North America Board Representative for the Successful Transgenerational Entrepreneurship Project (STEP).
